About Robert

Robert P. Schoenfelder, CNM Governing Board Member, District 7

Early Life and Education

Robert P. Schoenfelder, candidate for re-election to the Central New Mexico Community College (CNM) Governing Board, has been a proud resident of New Mexico since the age of two. He was raised in Albuquerque and graduated from Albuquerque Academy, where he was an honor student and participated in both track and football. He earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of New Mexico in 1977.

Career in the Nuclear and Environmental Industries

He began his career in the nuclear industry as a Radiation Safety Officer at a uranium mill operated by Ranchers Mining and Exploration, a New Mexico company owned by Maxie L. Anderson. Two years later, he joined Eberline Services, a Santa Fe-based company supporting the then-booming uranium industry, as a professional health physicist. As the uranium industry declined, he transitioned to a role in the Radiological Services Department at Roy F. Weston, Inc., an environmental engineering firm headquartered in West Chester, Pennsylvania. Over the next 40 years, he managed radioactive site planning and remediation, waste disposal, and program oversight for clients in the private, commercial, federal, and state sectors. He also served as the company’s Corporate Health and Safety Director and Director of the Radiological Services Program.

Professional Credentials and Affiliations

Mr. Schoenfelder has been an active member of the national Health Physics Society since 1979 and the Rio Grande Chapter, which serves New Mexico. He became a Certified Health Physicist in 1988 after passing the American Board of Health Physics certification exam and has maintained his credentials ever since.

Service to CNM and Community Impact

After retiring from Weston in 2020, he turned his focus to community service and joined the CNM Governing Board. A self-taught mechanic and home renovator, Mr. Schoenfelder has long been interested in the hands-on, career-focused education that CNM—formerly known as TVI—provides. His contributions to CNM have drawn on his extensive experience in financial management and program auditing, helping to guide the college’s strategic direction and ensure ethical and responsible stewardship of its resources. He has served on the Finance, Audit, and Capital Outlay Committees.

Leadership and Vision for CNM

Mr. Schoenfelder has proudly served for the past four years alongside six other board members—each representing separate districts in Bernalillo and Sandoval counties—and with CNM President Tracy Hartzler, who was selected in 2020. Under their leadership, CNM has earned national recognition for its innovative programs, strong partnerships, and outstanding student outcomes. He is eager to continue building on CNM’s momentum over the next four years.
